The Advancing Faculty Diversity Grant provides funding $450,000.00 in funding from the UC Office of the President, for the purposes of increasing the diversity of the Ladder Rank Faculty.  Details as follows:

  • For basic science recruitments, we would establish a standing search committee composed of several members from multiple basic science departments who would run the search for Underrepresented Minorities (URM) faculty. Candidates identified for any of the basic science departments would be considered. This initiative directly addresses a major issue in hiring URM faculty—the research foci of the very small pool of URM candidates in a given year rarely aligns with the highly focused searches that are typical in the basic science departments. This initiative has been endorsed by the Basic Science Chairs and by the program directors of our Ph.D. programs.
  • Other ladder rank recruitments would be assisted by the VCDO in the diversification of the search with active outreach, including travel to seek out academic stars as they are presenting at national meetings (Search Ambassadors). In addition, the hiring process will be supported by the Equity Advisors program of the Office of Diversity and Outreach. Current faculty in that program and across the schools identified will be leveraged to provide support, information and advice about practices for achieving excellence, equity and diversity in faculty recruitment.
