"Public charge" is a designation that can be made that deems an immigrant unfit for permanent residency based on one's likelihood to be "dependent on public benefits". Historically, only cash benefits and long-term care were considered in making this determination. On October 10, the Trump Administration released a proposed regulatory change to include health, housing, and nutrition benefits in this determination.

After the publication of the proposed change on the Federal Registry, a 60-day public comment period began that closes on December 10. Submitting comments is the best way to have your voice heard, and to get this proposal withdrawn.

We are calling on all healthcare professionals and students to stand against this cruel regulation. Nobody should have to choose between their immigration status and their health, their home, or feeding their family.
