The program is open to all students, with or without scientific backgrounds, and with a special focus on under-prepared, lower income students. The program provides training and personal support to prepare students for certificates and degrees in the Biosciences. The Bridge program is a semester-long, 8-unit program. Students enroll in 3 concurrent classes in Biosciences, Language Applied to Biosciences and Math Applied to Biosciences, which meet 3 days a week for 4 hours a day. These classes are offered as day and evening courses at different campuses in San Francisco. Find out more about the course requirements. Students who wish to obtain hands-on experience through an internship in the second semester must enroll concurrently in the Bridge's Internship program. This requires for students to take an additional 4 units and 7 hours of classes during the Bridge semester. Students can also enroll in these courses after they have completed the Bridge program.

The Fresno County Medical Society Scholarship Foundation is an incorporated entity (501 (c) (3) of the Fresno-Madera Medical Society, created to administer a perpetual and revolving scholarship fund for deserving medical students of Fresno and Madera counties. The Scholarship Foundation was made possible by the excess funds realized from the Sabin Oral Polio Sunday Clinics in 1962-63. With the efforts of the citizens of both counties, these clinics were organized and sponsored by Fresno-Madera Medical Society to immunize the population of Fresno and Madera counties against poliomyelitis. Throughout the years, additional funds have been generated through contributions, memorial gifts and repayments on monies from former recipients. All applications for scholarships are reviewed and considered by the Scholarship Foundation Board, members of the Fresno-Madera Medical Society. All information submitted is confidential. Scholastic achievement, need and prospects for completion of the chosen curriculum are important considerations and factors in granting a scholarship.

The Goldsmith scholarship program is one of the many ways in which Kaiser Permanente continues to translate our values into action. As Dr. Ellison conveyed to the scholars: "Your altruism and commitment to reducing the cultural and linguistic barriers in health care align beautifully with our mission at Kaiser Permanente." Kaiser Permanente encourages diversity in the medical profession throughout our programs and practices. We plant seeds for future physicians by nurturing students who are committed to providing culturally responsive care. Providing culturally competent care is part of Kaiser Permanente's long-standing values.
