The UCSF Research in Implementation Science for Equity (RISE) program is part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institutes Program to Increase Diversity among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE). The goal of the PRIDE program is to enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce for junior faculty and transitioning post-doctorates from diverse backgrounds to enable them to become competitive independent scientists. The UCSF RISE program is an all-expenses paid training opportunity for junior faculty who are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. The program involves a two-week RISE Summer Institute, focused on implementation science (ImS) and career mentoring and is hosted by UCSF's Center for Vulnerable Populations in July in San Francisco. RISE Scholars also complete a second summer institute the following summer and take part in year-round distance mentoring activities. The objectives of the program include (1) prioritizing research addressing health disparities; (2) learning how to produce high-quality funding proposals; (3) building research skills in implementation science; (4) gaining access to a larger national network of mentors and mentees through NHLBI and other NIH national initiatives; and (5) preparing trainees for independent research careers. RISE is funded through an NHLBI grant R25HL126146.

This grant mechanism provides support for senior fellows, instructors, assistant, associate and full professor faculty from historically disenfranchised racial and ethnic groups that are under-represented in health sciences, or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The goal is to encourage fellows and faculty from these groups to remain in academia as career professionals and thus to increase the diversity of our faculty. Research can be any area relevant to clinical and translational research which includes bench-to-bedside/laboratory-to-human (T1) translational research, clinical research and bedside-to-community/evidence-to-practice (T2/T3) research. Social, behavioral and economic research as it affects health is included. If not directly involving the study of people or populations, the proposed research must be clearly justified as being on the path to potential use in humans.

This innovative program, started in 2009, educates students and providers about healthcare disparities faced by members of the LGBTQI community. Specialists in LGBTQI healthcare are brought together to discuss a wide range of topics including transgender health, bisexual invisibility, lesbian health, intersex awareness, gay men's health, youth and aging issues, and LGBTQI parenting. Attendees are given the opportunity to interact with specialists through small breakout sessions and panel discussions featuring community professionals and patients. The forum includes several opportunities for professional networking and is offered as elective credit for current UCSF students.

Underrepresented in Medicine (UIM) provides racial and ethnic minority students, students from lower-income households, and students who are the first in their family to attend medical school easy access to mentoring. UIM and its mentoring project aim to provide targeted experiences to 1st and 2nd year medical students with less inherent medical experience before they start 3rd year and are evaluated (in part) on their medical school cultural knowledge on the wards. We aim to begin providing this advantage by facilitating mentorship from physicians from all across the Bay Area. These volunteers will donate their time to invest in the next generation of medical professionals, and bestow in them the institutional knowledge, wisdom and emotional support they have acquired throughout their years in medicine.

PROF-PATH (Promoting Research Opportunities Fully-Prospective Academics Transforming Health) is a research and academic career development program for health professions students funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities. We train UCSF students from underrepresented in medicine (UIM) backgrounds regardless of research area focus, and students interested in health disparities research regardless of background. PROF-PATH provides funding, classes, mentorship, community, and opportunities for training for students from all four UCSF professional schools. SUHLA is a summer academy for rising 11th graders participating in the FACES for the Future-SF program at the O'Connell High School Health & Science Lab. SUHLA participants will learn key concepts of community health, social justice, advocacy, and social determinants of health through the lens of health and human rights, especially as it relates to the SF Mission District. We are recruiting graduate students in the fields of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy as SUHLA Fellows. The SUHLA Fellowship is a total of 6 weeks during the summer. This begins with a primer session before the summer academy, where Fellows receive training in teaching skills, small group facilitation, program implementation/evaluation, and community assessment. The Fellowship is followed by the 3 week academy in which the Fellows will take on an instructive role and facilitate the curricular sessions. This will largely take place at SFGH with some sessions at other UCSF-associated campuses. The Academy will culminate in with SFGH Family Health Center community fair, at which academy HS participants will present to their community highlighting health topics.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Pitts Family Foundation is proud to offer a summer internship program for minority students interested in journalism as a career and who want to learn about science writing. Experience what it's like to cover the scientific and technological issues that shape our global community. Science is a global activity, but the demographics of the journalists who cover it don't reflect that diversity. The Minority Science Writers Internship is for students who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism and who want to learn more about science writing. The internship takes place each summer at the Washington, DC headquarters of AAAS's Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world. Interns spend 10 weeks at Science under the guidance of award-winning reporters and editors, and have a chance to experience what science writers do for a living. Interns are expected to contribute to the weekly news section, including bylined articles in the print and electronic news service. The paid internship provides for travel to and from the internship site in Washington, DC. Living accommodations and expenses are the responsibility of the Intern. The internship runs from June to mid-August.The program is a paid, 10-week experience under the guidance of the weekly magazine's award-winning staff of professional science writers and editors.
