The purpose of the Minority Training Program in Cancer Control Research (MTPCCR) is to increase ethnic diversity in the field of cancer control research by encouraging minority students in master's level health programs as well as master's trained health professionals to pursue a doctoral degree and a career in research. The program has been designed to enhance participants'; (1) Understanding of the power of research to effect change; (2) Awareness of the strengths and limitations of research methods, theory, and interventions in eliminating health disparities; (3) Interest in cancer control research, from surveillance to epidemiology, individual behavior change, health services, and policy research; and (4) Research, networking, information seeking skills, and motivation and ability to successfully apply to a doctoral program.

In the Fall of 1981, some concerned staff members and students met to discuss the possibility of forming an Asian Pacific American network on the UC systemwide level. They saw the need for such an organization to directly address issues impacting Asian Pacific Americans on the UC campuses. APASA was thus developed with representative on the UC campuses and was introduced to the San Francisco campus in 1988.

The Visiting Scholars Program (VSP) is a funded program designed to give students with a diverse background a chance to experience the training that the University of Washington Department of Medicine has to offer. Students will spend four weeks on an internal medicine elective at the University of Washington Medical Center or Harborview Medical Center and care for a variety of patients in our tertiary care centers. Near the completion of the elective students will be offered an opportunity to interview with the internal medicine residency program. Accepted applicants will receive funding for their travel and lodging expenses.

he National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Fellows and Affiliates Program at UCSF is designed to support historically underrepresented and marginalized PhD students in basic science graduates programs. UCSF’s first IMSD grant was awarded in 1997, which supports selected students in the first two years of their graduate studies. To date, over 100 students have benefited from an IMSD Fellows and Affiliates Program at UCSF.

EXCEL is an inter-departmental effort primarily coordinated by the Community and Government Relations department. Other UCSF partners involved in the program include UCSF's Interim Staffing Services, as well as the campus and medical center human resources departments. the UC San Francisco Excellence through Community Engagement & Learning (EXCEL) Program is a clerical/administrative training program which aims to develop the potential workforce in UCSF's surrounding communities and provide San Francisco residents with access to health-field related employment opportunities.
