eQuality Scholarship Collaborative has fostered student leadership for more than a quarter century. In 2016, our cumulative scholarship awards surpassed $1,000,000. eQuality Scholarship Collaborative awards scholarships to honor and encourage California students for their service to the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community.

The Bay Area Schweitzer Fellows Program is a one-year interdisciplinary, mentored fellowship program focused on health-related community service and leadership development. In addition to the four overall goals of the U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Program®, the Bay Area Schweitzer Fellows Program strengthens Fellows' resolve to provide health service to under-served populations by facilitating opportunities for students to: 1) Use their skills and knowledge in real-life situations; 2) Become culturally sensitive and compassionate caregivers; 3) Understand the impact of social and environmental determinants of health; 4) Build capacity for and commitment to improving the health status of individuals and communities as well as contributing to social change; 5) Work collaboratively and across disciplines in pursuit of a common goal; and 6) Learn how to exercise leadership skills to work with and influence community based organizations, community leaders, and academic institutions to embrace holistic, service-oriented approaches to health.

The American Diabetes Association's Core Research Program funds research with novel and innovative hypotheses in any area relevant to the etiology or pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications that hold significant promise for advancing the prevention, cure or treatment of diabetes. Basic, clinical, translational and epidemiological or health services research approaches are encouraged.

The Haile T. Debas Diversity Fellowship was established to support the Department of Surgery's goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minority academic surgeons. The General Surgery Residency Training Program has a long tradition of training academic general surgeons. Participating in a 4th year sub-internship at UCSF provides the student with the opportunity to experience first-hand this environment of clinical excellence, inquiry and investigation. To help defray the costs of a clerkship in San Francisco, the Fellowship Award provides a stipend of $2,500.00, usable towards tuition, transportation, housing, and incidental expenses. Haile T. Debas, M.D., Maurice Galante Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Emeritus at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and Director Emeritus of the UC Global Health Institute (UCGHI), is world-renowned for his contributions to academic medicine and widely consulted on issues of global health. His storied career as a physician, researcher, professor, and academic leader spans over four decades in Canada and the U.S.

The HENAAC Scholars Program addresses the immense need that the United States has to produce more domestic engineers and scientists. The goal of the program is to ensure STEM college retention with a 3.0 grade point average or higher; to guarantee college graduation with an undergraduate technical degree in four-five years; and, to contribute to Hispanic communities by producing STEM role models for future generations and securing the country's place as the finest technological leader in the world.

The UCSF/Kaiser Bridging Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) is a career development program for women's health research. Through financial support, targeted mentorship, and educational programs, we support the next generation of scholars. The program is a joint effort of the University of California, San Francisco, and the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.

The Markowski-Leach Scholarship fund was established as a result of the vision of Tom Markowski and Jim Leach. Tom and Jim were a gay couple living in San Francisco. As the AIDS crisis spread in the early 1980s, they talked about what they would like their legacy to be. They "wanted to make a difference" and felt that, at that time, there was a dearth of positive role models for gays and lesbians. This became the defining theme of the scholarships: to assist in the education of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) people who would then have an impact on other LGBTQ people through their works. The Scholarship fund was part of a bequest from the estate of Jim Leach, which reflected their mutual desire to provide financial assistance to LGBTQ people trying to further their education. Tom passed away 2 years before Jim. Both died as a result of HIV. According to the terms of the bequest, the Scholarship Committee is directed to evaluate applications seeking to identify LGBTQ individuals who are likely to: "Make a substantial contribution to society, thereby enhancing society's perception of gay and lesbian people as well as increasing the gay and lesbian community's self-esteem." Selected candidates will demonstrate their dedication to excellence in their lives through service, education, or employment. Scholarship are awarded to applicants whose leadership potential is evident regardless of their chosen field of study or financial need.

The K Scholars program, part of CTSI's Clinical and Translational Science Training (CTST) program, supports the career development of junior faculty building careers in clinical and translational research. This program serves the needs of junior faculty from all four UCSF Schools and from a range of disciplines and backgrounds. In order to increase access to primary care for the underserved, the GE Foundation and National Medical Fellowships founded the Primary Care Leadership Program (PCLP) in 2012. Now entering its eighth year, PCLP provides future healthcare professionals with an opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of primary care practice in community health centers (CHCs) across the US. This program is open to medical students and graduate-level nursing and physician assistant students who are poised to become leaders in primary care. For six weeks, PCLP Scholars will actively engage with a CHC Site Partner and PCLP mentors in leadership training, team-based project activities, and healthcare service delivery. Scholars will each receive a $5,000 scholarship stipend that is expected to cover travel, living, and lodging expenses during the service-learning experience period.
