The mission of DIVA is to create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful community for students, faculty, and staff in the School of Nursing. DIVA embraces the "big umbrella" of diversity to include human diversity in its many forms: gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical ability, socioeconomic status, age, and spiritual and political beliefs, among others. Our mission is to provide access to quality health care for underserved people of California. This is accomplished by linking academic training programs with training sites in urban and rural underserved areas of the state such as community clinics and health centers, hospitals and other community based sites. The California AHEC has 13 centers, each responsible for a geographic service area in an urban or rural part of the state. Each center develops its own programs based on the needs of their service area and include continuing education for health professionals and staff working in underserved communities; rotations and other community experiences for health professions students and residents and youth health careers programs for underrepresented minority and other disadvantaged K-14 students. Each of these programs seeks to train future HPs, recruit and retain health professionals for community clinics and health centers and other types of sites that provide medical/dental and behavioral health services to the underserved populations of CA.

Free faculty development workshops fall into several series to serve UCSF faculty and learners at all levels of educational development and interest that includes: 1) Key Educational Skills Series: Foundational educational knowledge; 2) Clinical Education Skills Series: Topics with a clinical teaching focus; 3) Simulation Education Skills Series: Skills for teaching with simulation; 4) Interprofessional Teaching Skills Series: Skills for creating and maximizing interprofessional learning opportunities; 5) Teaching for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety: Skills for teaching QI/PS in didactic and clinical settings; 6) Education Leadership Skills Series: Skills for current and aspiring education leaders; 7) Assessment and Education Research Skills Series: Skills used in learner assessment, program evaluation, and education research; 8) Medical Education Grand Rounds: Short, up-to-the minute lectures, often with visiting scholars; 9) Special Topics in Education Series: Timely and cutting edge topics by invited and local faculty developers. The workshops address one or more of six educational themes: (1) Assessment; (2) Curriculum Development; (3) Leadership and Career ; (4) Learning; (5) Teaching; and (6) Research.
