UNCF/Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships will help African American graduate students complete coursework, conduct research, and prepare the dissertation required for a doctoral degree in the biomedically relevant life or physical sciences and engineering. Awards up to $53,500. At least 12 dissertation fellowships will be awarded in 2014. Each fellowship provides up to a maximum of $53,500, which includes a Stipend of up to $43,500 for the Fellow and a Research Grant of up to $10,000 to support the research needs of the Fellow. The fellowship stipend is intended to cover from 12-24 months of fellowship tenure. A maximum of $30,000 in stipend may be received in any 12 month period. The Fellow must be engaged in and within 1-3 years of completing the dissertation research having successfully completed all qualifying exams by September 1, 2015. Each UNCF Merck Graduate Fellow will be paired with a mentor/s and will be expected to maintain regular contact with his/her mentor. Each Fellow will present a progress report of research work during the last half of the fellowship tenure. Each Fellow must also submit a two-page research summary of their fellowship research and updated Curriculum Vitea to UNCF at the end of their fellowship tenure. UNCF must be notified upon receipt of the degree.

The Graduate and Postdoc Queer Alliance works to build an active community of LGBTQI researchers at UCSF by hosting events for LGBT students, post-docs, and others. The UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations at San Francisco General Hospital carries out innovative research to prevent and treat chronic disease in populations for whom social conditions often conspire to both promote various chronic diseases and make their management more challenging. Founded in 2006, the CVP is based within the UCSF Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine and is located on the campus of San Francisco General Hospital. Beyond the local communities it serves, CVP is nationally and internationally known for its research in health communication and health policy to reduce health disparities, with special expertise in the social determinants of health, including literacy, food policy, poverty, and minority status, with a focus on the clinical conditions of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

The Haile T. Debas Diversity Fellowship was established to support the Department of Surgery's goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minority academic surgeons. The General Surgery Residency Training Program has a long tradition of training academic general surgeons. Participating in a 4th year sub-internship at UCSF provides the student with the opportunity to experience first-hand this environment of clinical excellence, inquiry and investigation. To help defray the costs of a clerkship in San Francisco, the Fellowship Award provides a stipend of $2,500.00, usable towards tuition, transportation, housing, and incidental expenses. Haile T. Debas, M.D., Maurice Galante Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Emeritus at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and Director Emeritus of the UC Global Health Institute (UCGHI), is world-renowned for his contributions to academic medicine and widely consulted on issues of global health. His storied career as a physician, researcher, professor, and academic leader spans over four decades in Canada and the U.S.

The HENAAC Scholars Program addresses the immense need that the United States has to produce more domestic engineers and scientists. The monthly stem cell seminar series brings scientists from all over the world to the forefront of regenerative medicine, and emphasizes the basic research and translational themes of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF. These seminars provide an opportunity for the UCSF community to learn about the work being done by prestigious researchers from other institutions, preview unpublished scientific results, initiate collaborations and build networks. The speakers that are invited to the series provide novel insights into stem cell functions, tissue development, and cell-based approaches for the treatment of diseases. Seminars generally occur on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 12:00 pm.
