CIENCIA aims to provide an opportunity for the UCSF community to hear specialized, technical talks in Spanish, foster the development of Spanish speaking skills, and establish networks with faculty with strong international connections. More broadly, CIENCIA was formed to enrich the cultural experience at UCSF by providing an environment to hear impressive scientific talks in a language other than English. To accomplish these goals, CIENCIA organizes a monthly scientific seminar series in Spanish, inviting world-renowned Hispanic scientists, and a variety of social, cultural, and educational activities. Through the process, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience high-level talks in Spanish and even gain general and scientific Spanish vocabulary which will lead to greater opportunities post-graduation and/or better interaction with Spanish speaking colleagues. Furthermore, by integrating UCSF-based and non-UCSF based organizations, this group aims to establish broad connections with both Spanish speaking professionals and those committed to learning or improving their proficiency with the language, especially as it relates to their career field.

The Summer Research Program provides research opportunities in the biomedical and biological sciences. Students selected for summer research at UC San Francisco spend up to ten weeks working with UCSF faculty members on research projects. Participants in the program take part in seminars, lectures, and social events, creating a cohesive and supportive community. At the end of the program, students give presentations of their research and get valuable feedback from students, postdocs, and faculty at UCSF. Students are supported in these programs by funds from the AMGEN Scholars Program, the National Science Foundation, Genentech, the University of California Office of the President, and UCSF Graduate Division.

Center for Aging in Diverse Communities (CADC) scholars will have the opportunity to interact with investigators on the CADC center grant, enhance their research skills and expand their knowledge about aging and disparities research among minority populations. Scholars will be assisted in developing and submitting a career-development or independent research proposal based on results of their pilot studies. CADC scholars will receive training in issues pertaining to minority aging research as well as feedback on papers, grant ideas, and other academic products through monthly seminars focused on works in progress with CADC faculty. They will be encouraged to participate in scientific meetings and training opportunities offered by the National Institute on Aging. CADC Scholars will also have access to the resource cores of the UCSF Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) that supports research on the determinants of outcomes of disability in vulnerable elders. The OAIC will also be co-funding one of the CADC pilot awards focused on vulnerable older adults.

Those awarded the Allied Healthcare Scholarship may receive up to $8,000 for one year of school. If awarded, recipients agree to a twelve (12) month service obligation practicing full time, direct patient care at a qualified facility in California. Qualified facilities include those designated by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources Administration (HRSA) or California's Shortage Designation Program, a liaison to the federal Shortage Designation Branch (SDB) of Health Resources and Services Administration as Medically Underserved Area (MUA), Medically Underserved Population (MUP), Health Professional Shortage Area- Primary Care (HPSA-PC), Health Professional Shortage Area- Mental Health (HPSA-MH). In addition to the Federal and CA state designations, any state, county, veteran, or correctional facility qualifies as well as Indian Health Centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers. If awarded, recipients agree to continue practicing full time, direct patient care at a qualified facility in California for a twenty-four (24) month service obligation. Qualified facilities include those designated by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources Administration (HRSA) or California's Shortage Designation Program, a liaison to the federal Shortage Designation Branch (SDB) of Health Resources and Services Administration as Medically Underserved Area (MUA), Medically Underserved Population (MUP), Health Professional Shortage Area- Primary Care (HPSA-PC), Health Professional Shortage Area- Dental (HPSA-D), Primary Care Shortage Area (PCSA), and Registered Nurse Shortage Area (RNSA). Those awarded the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Loan Repayment may receive up to $8,000. If you were previously awarded the BSN loan repayment, you may be awarded a second time for up to an additional $11,000. If awarded, recipients agree to a two-year service obligation practicing direct patient care at a qualified facility in California. Each award requires an additional two year service obligation.

Those awarded the Licensed Vocational Nurse Loan Repayment may receive up to $6,000. If awarded, recipients agree to continue practicing full time, direct patient care at a qualified facility in California for a twenty-four (24) month service obligation. Qualified facilities include those designated by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources Administration (HRSA) or California's Shortage Designation Program, a liaison to the federal Shortage Designation Branch (SDB) of Health Resources and Services Administration as Medically Underserved Area (MUA), Medically Underserved Population (MUP), or Health Professional Shortage Area- Primary Care (HPSA-PC).

Those awarded the Associate Degree Nursing Scholarship may receive up to $10,000. If awarded, recipients agree to a two-year service obligation practicing direct patient care at a qualified facility in California. Qualified facilities include those designated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources Administration (HRSA) as a medically underserved area (MUA), health professional shortage area (HPSA), county, state or veterans facility.

Those awarded the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Scholarship may receive up to $13,000. If awarded, recipients agree to a two-year service obligation practicing direct patient care at a qualified facility in California.
